Back to school for PR Recruitment

BACK TO SCHOOL

GET TOP MARKS IN THE YEAR AHEAD FOR YOUR PR HIRING STRATEGY

“Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything newAlbert Einstien

It’s that time of year again – new backpacks, fresh notebooks, and the inevitable debate over the best lunchbox snacks. But while the kids are heading back to school (we hear the sighs of relief), PR and comms agencies should also be gearing up for a fresh start and reviewing their PR & comms hiring strategy.

First, the timetable

Your PR & comms recruitment strategy needs a little back-to-school update. Here’s how to turn your hiring process into an A* operation by sticking with an ‘Ofsted Outstanding’ recruiter. Let’s break it down by “subjects,” shall we?

History: Lessons from the Past

The landscape for PR executive search recruitment for comms professionals has changed dramatically, especially post-Covid. The glory days of experienced, plentiful, and responsive candidates are a distant memory.

Today, sourcing and securing top talent and future leaders requires a strategic and focused approach. History tells us that learning from past challenges and adapting to the current climate is essential.

Maths: The Equation for Success

The recruitment process can feel like a complex equation. Numerous variables – candidates, roles, and timelines can make it challenging to find the right solution.

Using multiple recruiters is like trying to solve an equation with infinite unknowns. An exclusive partnership with a specialist recruiter simplifies the equation to, 1+1 = Increasing your chances of finding the perfect fit.

Science: Experiment or Formula?

Should you experiment with multiple recruiters or follow a proven formula? The evidence suggests that exclusive partnerships yield better results. Just as a scientist relies on controlled experiments, a focused recruitment procedure delivers more predictable outcomes.

English Literature: The Art of Storytelling

Your PR and communications team are the chroniclers of your brand. They craft narratives, manage reputations, and build relationships. The people you hire to join this team are crucial to the success of your story. A good recruiter is like a Jane Austin heroine who can match the right talent to your plot. (Pride & Prejudice or Persuasion perhaps…).?

Geography: Mapping Your Talent Pool

A skilled recruiter is a cartographer of the talent landscape. Our topographic map can identify hidden gems, and perfectly navigate candidate ecosystems.

Work exclusively with a specialist recruiter, and you will gain access to the deepest depths of the oceans and the highest altitudes. Implement diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I) initiatives to ensure your workforce reflects the society in which you operate.

Art: The Beauty of Collaboration

A successful recruitment partnership is a creative collaboration. The recruiter becomes an extension of your team, sharing your perspective and vision while understanding your brand. This partnership is fundamental for priming your employer branding canvas ready to paint the perfect picture to attract your viewing audience.

PE: Teamwork Makes the Dream Work

PE teaches us the importance of teamwork (and how to dodge flying objects). In recruitment, collaboration is key. An exclusive recruiter isn’t just filling roles, they’re part of your team and invested in your success. Over time, they get to know your agency’s strengths and quirks, making each hire a slam dunk.

Think of it as building a championship team – you need trust, cooperation, and shared goals. With the right recruiter on your side, you’ll celebrate victory on sports day.

Drama: Avoiding Unnecessary Theatrics

Ah, drama – the class where everything is bigger, bolder, and often more chaotic than necessary. But in recruitment, drama is the last thing you need. Working with multiple recruiters can lead to lots of unnecessary theatrics; mixed messages, competing agendas, and a whole lot of stress.

Skip the drama by sticking with one trusted recruiter who knows how to keep things running smoothly. They’ll handle the casting (avoiding the divas and method actors), ensuring that candidates fit their roles perfectly without any backstage chaos. The result? A seamless performance where everyone knows their lines and the curtain rises on a successful hire.

Homework: Do Your Research and don’t say “My dog ate it.”

Before diving into a partnership, it’s crucial to do your homework.

Question potential PR & Comms recruiters about their industry knowledge, understanding of your agency’s specific needs, and fee structure. Be wary of those offering the lowest rates; they may lack experience, and knowledge, or fail to prioritise your role due to a heavy workload. If they are offering a retained option, check their workings out (a proper retained search is a different offering to just paying up front). Prior preparation and planning…

Head’s Report: Don’t squander your potential.

As the new academic year begins, it’s time to sharpen those pencils and your PR & comms recruitment strategy. Treat each part of the process like a school subject and by sticking with a recruiter who knows the PR & comms curriculum, you’ll be setting yourself up for top marks. Avoid detention, focus on what works, and get ready to watch your agency thrive with a team that’s ready to crush it in the year ahead.
